Interested in therapy? Learn what a free 15-minute consultation looks like.

Starting therapy can be a big decision. Most people want a low-pressure way to find out if a therapist is the right fit before they commit to ongoing sessions. That's what the free consultation at Dimensions Counseling Center is for. If you're looking for a therapist in Johnson City, TN, here's what that first consultation can look like.
What the Free Consultation Is
Dimensions Counseling Center offers a free 15-minute consultation for anyone thinking about therapy, whether they are in Johnson City or somewhere else in Tennessee, Virginia, or North Carolina. We can do it by phone or video, whatever's easier for you. There's no cost and no obligation to book a full session afterward. You get to talk directly with a licensed therapist, ask whatever's on your mind, and get a feel for whether the practice fits what you need.
What Gets Covered on the Call
You’ll have a few minutes to talk about what’s got you interested in therapy, but don’t get into deep details since we only have about 15 minutes. Maybe you’re experiencing stress, anxiety, burnout, a relationship problem, or something from your past that you haven’t been able to deal with yet. You can ask how the therapist works, including their typical types of treatments like EMDR or the Gottman Method. You’ll get answers about insurance, costs, and scheduling before you ever book a session. There’s no paperwork for this call so there’s nothing to fill out ahead of time, you just get to talk and see if you and the therapist are a good fit.
Who Books a Consultation
People tend to book consultation appointments for several different reasons. Some are exploring therapy for the first time and want to know what to expect. Others have been in therapy before and want a therapist who fits better or for a different thing this time around. For couples, sometimes one parter mooks the first and checks things out before bringing it up to the other. Adults in Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol, and the rest of Northeast Tennessee use the consultation to compare their options before choosing to start.
Telehealth and In-Person Options in Johnson City
We have an office located in Johnson City for in-person sessions. Telehealth is always an option across Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina, wherever your provider may be licensed. During the consultation, you and the therapist can figure out which format works best for your schedule and your comfort level. It’s also an option to want in person sessions and then need to have the occasional virtual appointment if you’re not feeling the best, the weather’s bad, or something came up where you won’t be able to make it to the office, but still are able to have a session in a private space.
Insurance and Cost
At Dimensions Counseling Center, we take most major insurance providers such as BCBS, Optum, and Aetna in Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina. A consultation call is an excellent time to ask about your specific plan or about self-pay rates if you don’t have coverage through one of the insurances that are accepted or have a plan without mental health coverage. You can also choose to do self-pay if you simply don’t want to use your insurance benefits. It takes a couple of days to confirm the insurance benefits, so the sooner you can get your therapist your information, the better.
What Happens After the Call
It’s your treatment, so you get to decide what happens next. Most of the time, people feel comfortable enough with the therapist to go ahead and book their first session that day while they’re on the phone. Others might not be ready to commit to a therapist yet or want to talk with a couple other therapists first. If you want to go ahead and book, then the therapist will gather a bit more information from you and send you the paperwork that needs to be filled out before the first session.
