Your Couch, Your Schedule, Your Care
How Online Therapy Works (and Why It Helps)
If you’ve ever wished you could talk to a therapist without rushing across town, circling for parking, or rearranging your whole day, online therapy might be exactly what you’ve been hoping for. It’s real therapy, just done by secure video from a place that’s comfortable for you. In this post, I’ll break down what online therapy is, why many people love it, who it’s for (and when it’s not the best fit), and how to get started with a session at Dimensions Counseling Center.
Life is complicated enough. Let’s make mental health care easier, not harder.
What is online therapy?
Online therapy, sometimes called telehealth or virtual therapy, means you meet with your therapist by private video instead of in an office. You’ll get a secure link, click it at your appointment time, and you talk face-to-face on screen with your therapist. That’s it.You don’t need fancy equipment. A smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and internet connection will do. You’ll be able to see your therapist and they can see you, and you’ll have the same kind of real conversation that you would have in person: what’s been hard, what you want to change, and what might help this week. You’ll set goals, check in on progress, and practice simple tools you can actually use in your day-to-day life.
If you’re picturing something cold or robotic, don’t. The human connection is still the heart of the work online therapy just moves the “room” to wherever you are.
What are the benefits of telehealth counseling?
1. It fits real life.Busy schedule? Kids at home? Work that runs over? Online therapy removes the commute and the waiting room. Many clients talk about how the small time savings are what makes therapy doable week after week. When therapy fits your life, you’re more likely to stick with it and get results.
2. Your space, your comfort.
Plenty of people feel more open talking from their own couch or a quiet office at lunchtime. You control the environment: soft blanket, favorite mug, dog curled up by your feet. Feeling safer in your space often means you can be more honest and focused.
3. It opens doors.
If you live in a rural area, have limited transportation, travel for work, or manage health or mobility concerns, online therapy can be a game-changer. As long as you’re in Tennessee or Virginia at the time of your session (that’s where we’re licensed), we can meet.
4. Privacy and security.
Sessions happen over a private, secure video link. It’s just you and your therapist. If you’re worried about being overheard, headphones and a small white-noise app outside the door can add extra privacy.
5. The same quality of care.
The strategies we use online are the same practical, evidence-based tools we use in person. With anxiety, burnout, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and trauma-related stress especially, online work can be just as effective. You’ll still get clear takeaways to try between sessions.
Who can benefit from virtual therapy?
Online therapy is a great fit for adults in Tennessee or Virginia who want help with:- Anxiety and stress: racing thoughts, “what if” spirals, dread before the next big task
- Perfectionism and people-pleasing: feeling like it’s never good enough, difficulty saying no, fear of disappointing others
- Burnout: stretched thin, exhausted, and running on fumes—especially if you’re juggling caregiving, work, or both
- Trauma and tough life experiences: feeling stuck in fight/flight mode, easily overwhelmed, or on high alert
- Boundaries and relationships: struggling to speak up, set limits, or follow through on what you need
- Life transitions: new job, new parenthood, moves, breakups, and all the complicated in-betweens
- Or really anything else that you may have going on that you need to talk about
You’ll focus on practical skills that help you notice what’s happening inside, respond with compassion, and take steps that align with your values. In plain terms: fewer spirals, more steadiness.
When online therapy may not be ideal:
- You’re in an immediate crisis or thinking about harming yourself or someone else
- You don’t have a private place to talk or a stable internet connection
- You simply prefer in-person sessions (that’s okay your preference matters)
What to expect in an online session
Think of it like a calm, focused meeting about your wellbeing. A session typically starts by checking in, what felt heavy this week, what went okay, and where you want support. From there, we’ll explore simple tools you can practice between sessions. That might include:- Quick grounding exercises to steady your body when anxiety spikes
- Concrete steps for setting or keeping a boundary (the exact words help!)
- Ways to quiet the inner critic so you can take imperfect action
- Doable “homework” that fits your schedule
You’ll leave with something practical to try, or maybe you had a great insight and have “things to think about” for the week. Your therapist will adjust with you as time goes on.
Simple tips for a smooth video session
- Find a private spot. A bedroom, home office, or even your parked car can work. Headphones help.
- Reduce interruptions. Close other apps, silence notifications, and let people around you know you’ll be unavailable.
- Lighting matters. Face a window or a lamp so we can see one another easily.
- Join a few minutes early. A quick audio/video check lowers stress and lets us use every minute well.
Why this approach works; especially for busy, caring people
A lot of the folks I see are the go-to person for everyone else: dependable, high-achieving, and deeply caring. They’re also tired, anxious, and hard on themselves. Therapy doesn’t “fix” your life in one leap, but it gives you steady, practical steps that add up. Online sessions make showing up for those steps realistic, no commute, no extra logistics, no juggling childcare for an extra hour. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s momentum. It’s being a little kinder to yourself on a tough day, following through on a boundary even when it’s uncomfortable, and choosing one small action that honors what matters to you. Week by week, that builds a life that feels more grounded and less frantic.
