Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Loosening the struggle with your thoughts so you can move forward with what matters.

Managing your thoughts and feelings is taking more energy than you expected.

You may spend a lot of time trying to reason or argue with your thoughts, calm your anxiety, or push away emotions that feel uncomfortable. Somes it works…for a little while but often it keeps you stuck in a loop.

You delay decisions, avoid situations that feel uncertain, you tell yourself you’ll act once you feel more confident, less anxious, or more certain. All the while, the things that actually matter to you stay on pause.

If you’re used to feeling capable and able to make decisions easily, this can feel especially frustrating. You find yourself trying to think your way through it or push yourself to move past it. But internal experiences don’t always respond to effort the way external problems do.

Man Meditating Indoors

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy can help you respond differently to what's happening inside.

ACT is an evidence-based therapy that focuses on building psychological flexibility.

Instead of trying to eliminate anxiety, sadness, or self-doubt, we work on changing how much control those experiences have over your behavior. The goal is to help you move toward what matters to you, even when discomfort is present.

What does ACT therapy look like?

We’ll focus on practical skills that help you:

  • Notice unhelpful thought patterns and step back from them

  • Allow difficult emotions to be present without getting pulled into struggle

  • Clarify what actually matters to you in this season of life

  • Take values-based action, even when you don’t feel completely ready

As we work together these changes can help evolve how you make decisions. You can start responding based on your values, not just on whether anxiety is present. Discomfort will probably still show up, but it doesn’t get dictate your direction any.

With ACT, you can:

  • Feel less controlled by anxious or self-critical thoughts

  • Stop waiting to feel better before taking action

  • Make decisions that reflect your values

  • Stay engaged in your life, even when emotions are uncomfortable

  • Develop greater flexibility in how you respond to stress

You don't have to wait until everything feels "ok" to take action.
